Israel´s Clandestine Diplomacies:
Golda Meir was a world figure unlike any other. Born in tsarist Russia in 1898, she immigrated to America in 1906 and grew up in Milwaukee, where from her earliest years she displayed the political consciousness and organizational skills that would eventually catapult her into the inner circles of Israel´s founding generation. Moving to mandatory Palestine in 1921 with her husband, the passionate socialist joined a kibbutz but soon left and was hired at a public works office by the man who would become the great love of her life. A series of public service jobs brought her to the attention of David Ben-Gurion, and her political career took off.Fund-raising in America in 1948, secretly meeting in Amman with King Abdullah right before Israel´s declaration of independence, mobbed by thousands of Jews in a Moscow synagogue in 1948 as Israel´s first representative to the USSR, serving as minister of labor and foreign minister in the 1950s and 1960s, Golda brought fiery oratory, plainspoken appeals, and shrewd deal-making to the cause to which she had dedicated her life - the welfare and security of the State of Israel and its inhabitants. As prime minister, Golda negotiated arms agreements with Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger and had dozens of clandestine meetings with Jordan´s King Hussein in the unsuccessful pursuit of a land-for-peace agreement with Israel´s neighbors. But her time in office ended in tragedy, when Israel was caught off guard by Egypt and Syria´s surprise attack on Yom Kippur in 1973. Analyzing newly available documents from Israeli government archives, Francine Klagsbrun looks into whether Golda could have prevented that war and whether in its darkest days she contemplated using nuclear force. Resigning in the war´s aftermath, she spent her final years keeping a hand in national affairs and bemusedly enjoying international acclaim. Klagsbrun´s superbly researched and masterly recounted story of Israel´s founding mothe 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jo Anna Perrin. Award-winning writer Matti Friedman´s tale of Israel´s first spies has all the tropes of an espionage novel, including duplicity, betrayal, disguise, clandestine meetings, the bluff, and the double bluff - but it´s all true. The four spies at the center of this story were part of a ragtag unit known as the Arab Section, conceived during World War II by British spies and Jewish militia leaders in Palestine. Intended to gather intelligence and carry out sabotage and assassinations, the unit consisted of Jews who were native to the Arab world and could thus easily assume Arab identities. In 1948, with Israel´s existence in the balance during the War of Independence, our spies went undercover in Beirut, where they spent the next two years operating out of a kiosk, collecting intelligence, and sending messages back to Israel via a radio whose antenna was disguised as a clothesline. While performing their dangerous work these men were often unsure to whom they were reporting, and sometimes even who they´d become. Of the dozen spies in the Arab Section at the war´s outbreak, five were caught and executed. But in the end the Arab Section would emerge, improbably, as the nucleus of the Mossad, Israel´s vaunted intelligence agency. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Vance. The 30-year clandestine struggle against the world´s most dangerous terrorist power. In the years since 9/11, the U.S. war on terror has focused on al-Qaeda, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Coverage of Iran has been devoted almost exclusively to its nuclear ambitions. Yet, as Ronen Bergman´s groundbreaking reporting in this vital investigative history reveals, for 30 years, Iran has been the world´s leading sponsor of global terror and stands as the most formidable sponsor of terror in the world today. Bergman, one of Israel´s top investigative reporters, gained unprecedented access to extraordinary sources from top to bottom in the Mossad and intelligence agencies around the world. Based on over 10 years of research and more than 300 exclusive interviews with key intelligence figures, he reveals that Iranian terrorist masterminds have crisscrossed the globe, conducting bombings and assassinations with impunity---even renting apartments and planning bombing attacks in New York City. Iran´s proxy, Hizballah, has virtually taken over southern Lebanon and threatens Israel with high-powered weaponry supplied by Iran. Iran and Hizballah worked closely with al-Qaeda and other Sunni terrorist groups in developing their terrorist operations, and Iranian commandos trained Iraqi insurgents in the crafts of suicide bombing and the building of the roadside bombs that have killed so many U.S. troops in Iraq. In response, and largely beneath the public´s radar, a vast clandestine war has been fought with Iran and Hizballah on one side and the CIA, Israel´s Mossad, and their European counterparts on the other. The full story of that secret war, told for the first time here, will fundamentally change the debate about U.S. national security priorities. A new axis of evil is emerging from Iran and spreading around the world, and Bergman shows that the CIA and the Mossad have so far been unable to thwart it. The Secret War with Iran is riveting and urgent. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Dick Hill. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/tant/000967/bk_tant_000967_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
Research on Jewish settlement of the Land of Israel in the modern era has long neglected the sea and its shores. This book explores the Yishuv´s hold on the Mediterranean and other bodies of water during the British Mandate in Palestine and the Zionist ´´maritime revolution,´´ a shift from a focus on land-based development to an embrace of the sea as a source of security, economic growth, clandestine immigration ( haapala ), and national pride. The transformation is tracked in four spheres - ports, seamanship, fishery, and education - and viewed within the context of the Jewish/Arab conflict, internal Yishuv politics, and the Second World War. Archives, memoirs, press, and secondary sources all help illuminate the Zionist Movement´s road to maritime sovereignty. By the State of Israel´s founding in 1948, the Yishuv had a flourishing nautical presence: a national shipping company, control over the country´s three active ports, maritime athletics, fish farming, and a nautical training school.
