Israel in Postmodern Jewish American Literature

The study focuses on the role and function of Israel in postmodern Jewish American literature. Hence, the work is based on the thesis that the existence of a Jewish State in the Middle East has developed into a key motive for postmodern Jewish American literature. The role of a Jewish State is examined in particular with regards to questions of Jewish American identity, as well as with regards to related questions of ambivalent attitudes and political positions towards Israel in general and Jewish American identity in particular. A comparison of Saul Bellow's 'To Jerusalem and Back' and Philip Roth's 'Operation Shylock: A Confession' provides a basis for the analysis of the above stated assumptions.

The Role of Lobbyists in American Foreign Polic...

This book illustrates how international lobbying can be seen as asking American Congresspersons to put the interests of other countries (Israel & South Korea) before those of the USA itself. The privatization of diplomacy divests the role of the USA foreign policy decision making process because, instead of focusing on a national-level maximization on interest, the parties involved are engaged in "satisficing" the decision reach of their organization, therefore, in actuality, it makes the United States a hostage of strong organization capabilities that infiltrate inside the American federal government and influences a particular goal affecting its foreign policy directions as well as the international structure as a whole.

U.S. Foreign Policy Discourse and the Israel Lobby

This book seeks to debunk the popular myth of an all-powerful pro-Israel lobby. Here, Kiely demonstrates how discourses surrounding American Identity and US foreign policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has deep roots in American historicity, have constructed an understanding of the conflict which is inherently more susceptible to the Israeli narrative. Kiely argues that the so-called power of what other researchers, such as Mearsheimer and Walt (2006, 2007), call 'The Israel Lobby' are limited by these discourses. It is the author's contention that groups such as The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) serve to amplify and reproduce existing representations within these discourses which align the United States and Israel in terms of cultural, historical and political values while simultaneously reinforcing dominant representations of the Palestinian 'Other'.
