The book of Hosea is the first book of the minor prophets in the Christian Old Testament and Hebrew Bible. Set during the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, the narrative rejects the worship of gods other than Yahweh and suggests that a reconciliation between Yahweh and Israel is possible, if only the nation would repent. This book is beautifully voiced by The Bible Reading Collective.... 1. Language: English. Narrator: The Bible Reading Collective. Both Isaiah and Hosea are writing at the same time, during the reigns of kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, 740-686 B.C. In Isaiah 1-35, Isaiah hauls Israel into court, charging her with unfaithfulness, calling out witnesses, and finding her guilty. The theme of these chapters is judgment. In Hosea, God says: ´´You know what I think; now I want you to know how I feel.” To tell us, God selects Hosea to deliver the message. To ensure that he does so vividly, he commands Hosea to marry the notorious whore, Gomer, who will be unfaithful to him over and over again. And each time, God tells Hosea to take her back. Hosea was the prophet with a broken heart. As Pastor Skip Heitzig teaches, Hosea’s devotion to an unfaithful wife mirrors the unfaithfulness of Israel, and the devotion of our loving Father God. 1. Hosea, a contemporary of Isaiah (for most of his ministry)a and Amos (in his earlier years) was the Jeremiah of the Northern Kingdom. His main target was the Northern Kingdom, yet his message was for the people of God. When Solomon died, Jeroboam rebelled and plunged the Northern Kingdom into a prosperous but idolatrous separation. After two centuries of abandoning their heritage, God sent Hosea to present His indictment and declare that He would use their enemies as His judgment.Amos was sent to Israel at a time when the nation feels militarily secure and prosperous, yet is turning to idolatry and abandoning their heritage. Misplaced confidence; false sense of security; abandonment of the greatness of their nation... (Sounds familiar, doesn´t it?) In many ways a complement to Hosea, this perspective on the plight of Israel parallels the predicament of our country today. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Chuck Missler. Mostly filled with prophecy, the heart of the book of Hosea also records the marriage between the prophet Hosea and the unfaithful Gomer, who represented the people of Israel as they constantly turned away from God´s ways. In this series, Skip Heitzig shows how despite our waywardness and idolatry, the Lord´s unconditional love cannot be exhausted. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Skip Heitzig. The book of Hosea is a Narrative History and Prophetic Oracle. Hosea is the first book in the sections of Minor Prophets. They are called Minor Prophets not because their material is less important or insignificant, but because of the size of the book they wrote was shorter in length. The prophet Hosea wrote it at approximately 715 B.C. It records the events from 753-715 B.C. including the fall of the Northern Kingdom in 722. The key personalities are Hosea, Gomer, and their children. Its purpose was to illustrate the spiritual adultery of Israel and God´s boundless love for His sinful people. Hosea brings God´s message to the wicked Northern Kingdom. During this time, they are active in oppressing the poor in slavery and worshipping idols. God, because of His grace, sent another opportunity for Israel to repent and turn to Him. Shortly thereafter, the Northern Kingdom went into permanent captivity. Christopher Glyn became a Christian at the age of 21, giving up a promising theatrical career in the U.K. to engage in full time missionary work. In the 35 years since then, he has been very active in the field of Christian radio, primarily on the Asia and African continents. ´´For years it has been my dream to record an audio version of the Holy Bible, combining my training as an actor with my love for God´s Word. I am happy now to have the opportunity to do so. I started the very long process of recording the Bible 3 years ago and by the summer of 2011, the entire Bible was finished. I pray with my whole heart that these readings will be a blessing and an inspiration to many. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Glyn. The prophet Hosea has much to say about the sinfulness of Israel, but he also has much to say about the faithfulness of God. As the Israelites worship other gods and move further away from their Creator, God´s judgment comes upon them. After judgment, however, God displays acts of mercy as he acts tenderly to his people, like a loving parent would. Listen to Hosea as he reminds Israel of God´s faithfulness and speaks prophesies concerning the redemption to come in latter days. 1. Language: English. Narrator: David Cochran Heath. The Minor Prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures are not ´´minor´´ because they are less important than the ´´major´´ prophets, but because they are shorter in length: Isaiah is 66 chapters; Obadiah is one. Nevertheless, the Minor Prophets are dazzling works that penetrate deeply into Israel´s relationship with God, and by inference into our own relationship with God. In Hosea, for example, God instructs the prophet to marry Gomer, the village whore, who will continually betray him with other men: God wants Hosea to know how God feels when Israel, God´s ´´bride´´, continually betrays him. Jonah is a great ´´fish tale´´, the story of a prophet who refuses God´s command to go to Nineveh (east of Israel in Assyria, northern Iraq of today), and instead boards ship for Tarshish (as far west as he can go, in Spain, the exact opposite direction!); he ends up in the belly of a great fish, who then vomits him out on dry land, back in Israel (which only goes to show, you can´t keep a good man down!). You get the picture. For over 20 years Dr. Creasy stood among the top 2% of UCLA´s teaching faculty, and in this series Dr. Creasy offers one of his famous ´´flagship´´ courses. 1. Language: English. Author Jennifer Rothschild has a story for you. It´s about an unlikely couple, an unusual courtship, a beautiful wedding, and an illicit affair. Despite this situation, the marriage did not fail. It flourished. Here is the story of Hosea´s love for Gomer - a woman who might have disappeared into her transgressions if not for the love of her husband. It´s a beautiful illustration of the story of God and Israel. Believe it or not, it´s your story, too. God chose you and loves you. If you wander off, he will find you. If you are afraid, he will reassure you. If you are broken, he will restore you. If you are ashamed, he will cover you. If you give up on him, he will not give up on you. No matter where you are, God sees who you are and loves you faithfully. Through the story of Hosea and Gomer, God tenderly reaches out to you and whispers, ´´My daughter, my name and nature are love. My name makes you lovely. Because I am worthy, I make you worthy. I am here to remind you of who you are. You are never invisible to me.´´ 1. Language: English. Narrator: Diana Batarseh.
