Syria and the Assad Family: The History Behind ...

I'm not a puppet. I wasn't made by the west to go to the west or any other country. I'm Syrian. I'm made in Syria. I have to live in Syria and die in Syria. - Bashar al-Assad, 2012 In early 2011, a political movement swept across the Arabic-speaking world that toppled despotic regimes and dictatorships. The political movement, which became known as the "Arab Spring", was popular in nature and made use of the Internet, particularly social networking websites, to remove dictators such as Muammar Qadaffi of Libya. Those dictators, who ruled their countries for decades, were unable to stem the tide of popular indignation against them, even though they tried using force and propaganda in ways reminiscent of the Cold War era. The events of the Arab Spring have come to be overshadowed by the civil war in the Arabic-speaking nation of Syria, which has been ruled throughout the 21st century by Bashar al-Assad. Though he had not planned on ruling Syria, several events conspired to make Bashar the successor of his father, Hafez. Though the West frequently looked for signs that Bashar might be a reformer, due in part to his formerly popular Western wife, Assad remained part of a critical alliance with Iran and the sub-state groups Hamas and Hezbollah. This formed an influential bloc that has influenced events across the Middle East, and one that Israel and the West have tried to break over the past decade. A crisis that may have threatened to involve either the United States, Russia, or both, appears to have been solved at least temporarily. However bigger issues concerning Syria still remain. Syria and the Assad Family explains how Hafez al-Assad's son grew up and the events that brought him to power in Syria. It also comprehensively analyzes the ongoing civil war against Assad. You will learn about Syria's notorious dictator like you never have before. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Phillip J Mather. Conflict & Connection

Most Jews and Christians are unaware that an extraordinary sea-change is taking place in Jewish-Christian relations. Conflict and Connection: The Jewish-Christian-Israel Triangle poses a crucial question: does this sea-change point to a fundamental and historic resolution of the centuries-old conflict between Christianity and Judaism? Author Moshe Aumann, in his role as Consul-General and Minister-Counselor for Church Relations at the Israeli Embassy in Washington DC, personally witnessed this growing tide of change. In this exciting book, Aumann begins with the historical background of Jewish-Christian relations, followed by a study of the changes that have been occurring in recent times. Observations are supported by numerous documents, including official statements of reconciliation and repentance offered to the Jewish people by many sects of Christianity; a Jewish statement on Christians and Christianity, entitled 'Dabru Emet'; and an agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel. Aumann also addresses problems that are yet to be overcome, such as anti-Semitism. Yet in spite of the major issues still to be resolved, Conflict and Connection illustrates a remarkable process of conciliation that is unfolding today, a process that inspires hope and change, a process that even fifty years ago was unimaginable.

Think Palestine

It is clearly obvious that, in the United States, limits are imposed on the Palestinians' right to speak, on what the Palestinians could or should not say. Platforms for an impartial Palestinian discourse were extremely narrow to begin with, and when any was available, Palestinians hardly took center stage. For that purpose, Dr. Effarah kept writing weekly articles in Arabic and English for the last twenty-six years with one objective-'Think Palestine.' This third volume includes unpublished articles for the last three years (2012-2015); volume 1 includes the published articles from 2001 to 2006, while volume 2 includes articles from 2007 to 2012. Dr. Effarah believes that the media discrepancies are far more pronounced. The moral crisis in mainstream Western media on the subject of Palestine requires volumes, and much has indeed been written about it. His writings are based on developing events that took place in the last seventy years of his own experience since he was uprooted from his home in Haifa, Palestine, in 1948, along with his community; such change in his life caused him to be involved in the politics of the Middle East. Dr. Effarah's articles on 'Think Palestine' have a propensity to find solutions to the Palestinian dilemma while waiting for a form of a peaceful settlement between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The struggle in Palestine requires-and in fact, demands-global solidarity, a critical mass of a support base that is enough to turn the tide against the violent Israeli occupation, incorporating governments and companies that currently support, sustain, and bankroll Israel's daily crimes against Palestinians. There were not enough Palestinian intellectuals around to speak for themselves and are capable of enunciating the Palestinian experience or that the struggle of Palestine is part of a larger battle against imperialism. Today, there's a massive shift that the Internet and social media has brought about-a change in understanding the truth about Palestine being occupied by intruders coming from the four corners of earth to fulfill a fallacy of certain myth that a certain god promised the land of Palestine to the Jews. However, the frame of mind that neglected or avoided the Palestinian narrative has not been defeated completely in the Western world as long as the appreciation of the authenticity of the Palestinian narrative to the central discourse of the Palestine-Israel conflict at every available platform-be it political, academic, cultural, artistic, or in the media-is not comprehended. Dr. Effarah attempts to create a voice for Arab Americans to stand up and be counted and act as an integral part of the American society and help Americans understand the Palestinians' situation as part of the Arab culture and heritage.
